Additional Construction Styles

Timber Frames

Leatherwood began incorporating timber frame details in our log buildings as far back as 1979, and we still combine the two styles when requested today.

In 1990 Tom attended a timber frame course taught by world renowned timber framer, Ted Benson, in order to pacify his desire to learn more about that craft. This gained knowledge was passed on to the crew who enjoy working with wood in a different method when the opportunity presents itself.

Timber frame design in general has few limitations, allowing an endless realm of possibilities. A good design avoids costly mistakes and onsite decisions. Bring us your ideas and let the excitement begin!

Chinked Log Construction

In the past, chinked construction was used by the less skilled North American settlers to put a quick roof over their heads. It was a fast method of construction, notching only the corners and filling in the gaps later with various natural materials that were readily available.

Today's chinked log buildings are still notched only at the corners, but chinked with synthetic backer rod and flexible chinking. Leatherwood can provide round or hewn logs and use either a saddle or dovetail notch at the corners. We find our clients choose this style of log construction purely for its heritage type aesthetics. Fully chinked log buildings are often similar in cost to scribed fit log construction.

Post and Beam

The picture shown here is a fine example of a Log Post and Beam structure. It also incorporates piece-by-piece log work between some of the posts. This style allows for great design versatility.

Hybrids generally incorporate log accents with conventional construction. Owners are allowed to see the beauty of log work in strategic places yet still maintain a conventional style home. Let your imagination run wild here.

The above types of log work basically summarize the remaining styles available beyond conventional scribe fit or chinked structures. These construction methods (like timber frame) have generally few design limitations and consequently offer endless possibilities. The staff at Leatherwood are well educated, extremely versatile and always open to a challenge. Let's talk about your ideas!
